Mission Report from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

1 min read

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is just a few dozen kilometers from the line of contact, but over the past month this particular village has been under constant shelling. Beyond the settlement we are heading to, there are more villages, but according to local residents, they are already “dead zones” — there are no people left.

A net stretched above the road is another sign that we are getting close. Google Maps doesn’t work here. We count road turnoffs and the kilometers we have covered so we don’t miss the turn we need.

We arrive after dark. We unload and set up the equipment so that we don’t have to spend time on it in the morning.

Key results of the mission:

  • 4 days of work;

  • 247 patients seen;

  • 178 pairs of glasses provided;

  • 174 bottles of eye drops provided.

Through the lens of diagnoses and complaints, we hear stories of people’s lives. Patients come in as entire families, often spanning several generations.

The most common diagnoses include presbyopia (age-related farsightedness), dry eye syndrome, cataracts, myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism, and hyperopia (farsightedness).

Most of these problems can be addressed with glasses, eye drops, and an appropriate visual routine.

We identified around 10 critical cases, including fresh injuries, where the doctor immediately referred patients for urgent inpatient treatment or performed the necessary procedures that could be done right there and then.

We are grateful that we happened to be in the right place at the right time — these people will not lose their sight.

With best wishes,

Team of CO CF See the Victory.
