In February 2022, Alex voluntarily joined the Ukrainian territorial defense. He had experience with weapons, as he had previously worked for a security company.
In March 2022, during a battle with a saboteur in the Kyiv region, Alex sustained an explosive injury. He does not remember how he got to the hospital and spent 5 days in a coma.
Alex received traumatic amputation and lost his left eye completely. The right eye was also seriously damaged. In total, the man underwent 9 surgeries.
After the injury, his vision gradually deteriorated, and soon it was lost completely.
Two months later, Alex was transferred to a geriatric nursing home. He recalls this period of his life with a heavy heart:
"There were no beds, so they put me on the floor and I slept there. I was completely blind. It was a real struggle WITH MYSELF: I felt useless and wanted to die".
"Three psychologists worked with me, but it did not help. I was in a deep depression. During that time, I had not spoken for six months..."
According to Alex, his faith in God gives him strength: "I am a religious person, I have always read the Bible, and my faith kept me going. I didn't go to extremes, I didn't start using drugs, smoking, drinking alcohol. My faith in God kept me going..."Our patient had not seen anything for two years. By a lucky chance, he visited the Novy Zir medical center.
Ophthalmic surgeon Oleksandr Filipchuk not only successfully restored the man's vision, but also provided important moral support by taking on this difficult case.
Now Alex's vision is gradually recovering.
Despite the challenges, our hero found the strength to move forward. He plans to become a chaplain to support other wounded soldiers.
We are glad to be a part of this story and wish Alex a speedy recovery!
With best wishes,
Team of CO CF See the Victory.
