A long way to restore eyesight: the story of a soldier

In the fall of 2022, infantryman Hennadii and his comrades were holding the line in the industrial area of Bakhmut, just 70 meters from enemy positions. During the battle, a mine landed: the fragments damaged his arms and leg, and one of them was deeply stuck behind his ear, while another tore his face and seriously injured his left eye. Hennadii lost his consciousness and regained consciousness in a hospital in Bakhmut. He continued his treatment in Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernihiv.

During his recovery, Hennadii was accompanied by his daughter Natalia. She spent several days searching for her father in different hospitals after he was wounded, as he lost his documents and means of communication during the evacuation. Now Natalia is working on her father's recovery: the shrapnel has already been removed from his head, several eye surgeries have been performed to remove the fragment and restore the aesthetic appearance of the eye area, and the through holes in his arms have been sewn up.

The soldier's daughter, Natalia, contacted the New Vision medical center in Kyiv and found out about the existence of a fund that helps the military cover the cost of surgery.

The soldier has a complicated diagnosis: after a penetrating wound, the cornea became swollen, a scar appeared on it, the lens was damaged and a secondary cataract formed, and there was a threat of retinal detachment. As a result, the vision in his left eye completely lost.

Hennadii was scheduled for several surgeries:

  • posterior closed vitreous surgery;

  • suture fixation of the artificial lens;

  • removal of a part of the vitreous.

The operation in the Novyi Zir medical center took place on December 20. As of mid-January 2025, the soldier can see! It is not perfect yet, but there is hope that it will get better.

The left eye now has a lens that allows him to see well in the distance. While the eye is healing, there is a bit of blurry vision.

The process of recovery will show whether there is a need for another surgical intervention or not. A bioimplant transplantation may be required if the vision fog does not dissipate.

We hope that the recovery will be successful and Hennadii will see the world clearly.

With best wishes,
