"Doctors who make miracles happen"
Before the war, Oleksandr worked in business and as a coach. He joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2022, serving as a senior sergeant in an anti-aircraft missile regiment and later in an engineering unit. He often worked at night and in low-light conditions, which gradually took a toll on his eyesight.
Oleksandr had no previous combat experience, but the skills he had developed in civilian life became invaluable during his military service. His background in orienteering and cartography, his ability to navigate difficult terrain, and his previous experience serving in the soviet army all came in handy.
In October 2025, Oleksandr was wounded when a fragment struck the bridge of his nose, causing blunt trauma to his eye. He received treatment at hospitals in Mykolaiv and Odesa, but his recovery journey was far from over.
In November 2025, Oleksandr came to Novyi Zir Medical Center. Ophthalmic surgeon Oleksandr Fylypchuk performed a complex procedure to restore his eye. First, the damaged natural lens was replaced with an artificial one. The new lens was then secured to the wall of the eye with a special suture to keep it in the correct position and prevent it from becoming displaced.
His vision in the injured eye is expected to gradually improve.
Oleksandr still has three more surgeries ahead of him to reconstruct the iris and restore the tear duct.
